Being part of a national network, with offices in 10 centres around New Zealand, gives BDO Gisborne a unique national perspective on the issues faced by farmers.

The Gisborne office can be broken down into business sectors, such as Farming, Maori Business and Commercial work, each led by specialists in the sector.

There are six partners and about 70 staff at the Gisborne office, and the practice is involved with local farming and community groups such as Federated Farmers, Waipaoa cadet training for the education of the next generation of farmers, and drought committees.

It consults regularly with Inland Revenue (IRD) on primary sector changes, on behalf of clients, and examples include changes to the Herd Scheme and drought declarations.

“We have built a livestock model to calculate livestock taxes, which is sold to the IRD and a large number of accounting practices in New Zealand. Partner Charles Rau is also on the primary sector Rural Advisory Committee, which consults with the IRD on tax policy in the farming sector.”

BDO can regularly be seen commenting in the local and national press on issues facing the primary sector, and provides specialist primary sector advice on tax planning and carbon credits.

It has a specialist group that looks after Maori farming, including the management of farming operations, so is well placed to comment on Maori farming issues too.

Another area BDO works in is farm succession, helping families with succession plans to either take over the family farm or prepare it for sale.

“We have experience with all sized farms, from your mum and dad owner-operators to corporate farming entities. We also have accredited staff to assist clients with software queries and training, if required.

“The ability to measure results and identify what makes clients successful is important, and being able to prepare budgets, monitor them and update them regularly is key to our success with clients.”

Useful features include the ability to undertake scenario planning, instant access to up-to-date information to drive decision making, and the practice is able to work with clients and their files from various locations – a face to face meeting is not necessarily required.
